Braves Do Just Enough To Hold Off Nationals

Braves 5, Nationals 3

The Braves comeback to win the 2nd straight series and are looking to possibly sweep the Nationals tomorrow.
The offense was lead by Kelly Johnson and Jordan Schafer as they both went 3-4. Kelly had a Solo Shot in the 3rd inning and then had a 2 run single later on. He was a triple away from the cycle. Jordan Schafer had two doubles and a single and scored twice. Yunel Escobar also went 2-3 with 2 walks and an RBI.
Kawakami made his debut today on the mound and pitching 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and walked 4 batters. He managed to also strikeout 8. Very nice performance from him today. I hope we can see more of that this year.
The Bullpen was absolutely HORRIBLE on Wednesday and gave up 8 runs in 3 innings, but they bounced back with a nice performance tonight. Moylan had given up 5 runs without getting a single out, but he pitched a perfect inning. Soriano also pitched a scoreless inning and Mike Gonzalez got the save with a perfect 9th.
The Nationals offense was dangerous, but they didn’t get much going in the last 3 innings. A 2-run homer from Zimmerman was the main highlight for them.

Braves Win 2nd In Philly With Jurrjens On The Mound

Braves 4, Phillies 0

Again the Braves come up victorious playing
in Phillidelphia against the Phillies. They were able to benefit from a
strong start from Jurrjens to become 2-0. Jair Jurrjens went 5.2
innings giving up 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2. The bullpen
was also nearly flawless as they only allowed 3 base runners after
Jurrjens left.
The Braves got on the board on the first pitch when
leadoff man Kelly Johnson homered off of the Ageless Wonder, Jamie
Moyer. Later on in the inning, the Braves benefited from a Chase Utley
error as Chipper scored from a ball hit by Brian McCann. Kelly Johnson
came through again with an RBI single in the 4th. Kotchman almost
scored as well in the 4th, but Raul Inbanez had a near pefect throw
from home to get him out. Chipper Jones hit his first home run of the
season in the 5th. That is Chipper’s 409th career home run. He is doing
great so far this season as he has 4 hits in 8 at bats with 3 of them
being extra base hits.
Jamie Moyer ended up going 5 innings
giving up 4 runs of 8 hits and 2 walks while he managed to strikeout 2.
The offense never really helped him out as they never got anybody to
score off of the 6 hits they had.
It seems like power is not an issue right that we need as we have hit 5 home runs and 3 doubles in the last two games.

The
Braves face the the Phillies one more time today at 3:30 before taking
an off day and then facing the Washington Nationals on Friday for the
home opener at Turner Field. Javier Vazquez will make his debut for the
Braves.

Braves Win Opener against Phillies

For the 2nd year in a row, the Braves play the first game of the season. Also the 2nd year in a row that we play away, but this is a much different team than last year’s. The team you saw playing are the “New Braves” are from what I know and have seen, they are good.

In the first inning, we got a 2 out single from Chipper Jones. The Next Batter absolutely crushed a Brett Myer’s pitch for the first home run of the season. I heard that kid is good as well. His name is Brian McCann.
Next inning, a guy, who I haven’t seen since 2007, hit a home run on the very first pitch of the second inning left field. Nice to have you back Jeff Francoeur. Great way to start your 2009 season.
Two batters after that, ROY candidate Jordan Schafer decided to join the Bigs with his own solo home run to center, which was during his first at bat in the Major Leagues. Welcome Jordan. You should fit in quite well.
If anyone still thinks we don’t have an Ace, please re-watch last night’s game and tell me how Derek Lowe did. 8 innings pitched, 4 strikeouts, 2 hits, and zero walks.  Sounds like an ace to me. He was almost perfect last night.
The Phillies got their first run from Mike Gonzalez. For a brief moment, the Phillies had some sort of a comeback going on (the fans got VERY involved), but it ended when Ryan Howard struck out and Ibanez followed him.
Final Score: Braves 4, Phillies 1

Monday is an off-day for the Braves, but we will be back on Tuesday when we face Jamie Moyer and the Phillies. We will send Jair Jurrjens to the mound.

Other News
Braves are retiring #31 in honor of Greg Maddux who retired in December. Maddux made 363 starts for the Braves and went 194-88 with a 2.63 ERA. He was definitely one of the best pitchers to ever play the game. We were all lucky enough to have gotten to watch him.
Remember to watch the NCAA Basketball Championship tonight. UNC plays Michigan State.

Chipper gets Extended: Josh Anderson Traded

Recently, the Braves traded speedy Outfielder Josh Anderson to the
Tigers for right-handed prospect reliever Rudy Darrow. Josh Anderson
was expected to take the Centerfield job once the season was over. Josh
had a decent spring, but posted a .283 on-base percentage in 19
Grapefruit League games. Schafer proved that he deserved it by hitting
.373 and recorded a .403 on-base percentage. Josh Anderson was out of
options, making it a very difficult decision. Wren has not ruled out
Gregor Blanco out of competition for CF, but it seems like Schafer is
the best bet to start the season in the starting line-up.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3471/3317368175_84934a61cb.jpg

It seems like this will be the first year of the Schafer Era, which should last for a very, very long time.

http://mlblogsdarion.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/jordan_schafer-thumb-1280x1243.jpg?w=546&h=531

The
prospect we got from the Tigers, Rudy Darrow, is suppose to be very
good and almost ready to play in the Majors. This really makes me
wonder why the Tigers would give up a reliever when that is what they
needed and already outfielders Granderson, Ordonez, Sheffield, Thames,
and Guillen. Today though, they released Sheffield, opening a spot for
Anderson to possibly play a bench role. Of course, the Tigers have not
made many good moves in a while, so I am hoping this one is another
that could help the Braves in the future. Other moves that have really
benefited with the Braves were the Smoltz-Alexander trade and the
Renteria-Jurrjens and Hernandez trade. I wonder what Darrow could end
up being like.
Here is what was on Mark Bowman’s blog:

Darrow,
who is expected to begin the season with Double-A Mississippi, went 5-3
with a 2.02 ERA in 47 combined appearances with Class A West Michigan
and Double-A Erie last year. In the process, the 25-year-old
right-hander posted a ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio of 4.8 and limited
right-handed hitters to a .183 batting average.
“He’s a sidearm
right-hander who throws anywhere from 90-94 [mph] with great sink,”
Wren said while comparing the young reliever’s delivery to Peter
Moylan’s.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1235/583275501_4896caacff.jpg?v=0
Sounds pretty good to me. You get an “A” for this one Wren (at least for right now).

Now about Chipper….

Chipper
Jones and the Braves have agreed to a three-year extension worth over
$42MM that includes an option for 2013. Here is the Breakdown according to The Baltimore Sun

“Due $10 million this season in the option year of a contract that began
in 2006, Jones gets a $3 million signing bonus as part of the new deal,
payable in $1 million installments each Jan. 15 starting next year.

Jones receives annual salaries of $13 million from 2010-12 and can earn
$1.5 million a year in performance bonuses: $750,000 each for 135 and
140 games.

His contract contains a $9 million option for 2013 that would become
guaranteed if he plays in 123 games in 2012 or averages 127 games in
2011-12. The option price could increase by up to $4 million: $1
million each for 128, 133, 138 and 140 games in 2012 (or averages of
132, 137, 138 and 140 in 2011-12). In addition, he could earn $1.5
million in performance bonuses based on the earlier criteria.

If the vesting option fails to become guaranteed, the club would hold a $7 million option.”

I have been waiting for this on
all Spring and I’m very excited. I like the deal and I think he deserves every penny of it.
Chipper won the Batting Crown last year and hit 19 home runs. Like most seasons in his past, he did spend time on the DL.
Like
Myself, many other Braves fans are excited about this. Hopefully he
gets more ABs next year to help show what he is still capable of doing.

Wren gets an A+ for this one.

Other news…

The
only other battle currently for the Braves in ST is the Bullpen.
Caryle, Bennett, and Campillo are in a battle for long reliever while
Acosta is still looking for a spot somewhere in it. Logan and
O’Flaherty are the Lefties looking for a spot, but if Soriano or Moylan
start the season on the DL, both could earn a spot. As of now, I think
Campillo and/or Carlyle will start the season in Atlanta and Bennett
getting traded. Acosta also looks like a player who might get traded,
but I think it’s unlikely. I’m not too sure about Logan and O’Flaherty
yet, but I’m thinking Soriano starts the season on the DL. I also think
that Blanco gets traded. I can see the White Sox being the biggest
suitors, but other teams might take a look at him because of his great
World Baseball Classic stint. We will soon find out though with only 5
days left until opening night.

Congrats Japan

I would like to also say congrats to Japan for winning the WBC. It was a great game and you deserved it.

Braves fans, expect a trade to be coming in the next 2 weeks. The Tigers look like the most likely trade partners. The Marlins or Twins could be other suitors.
Only 12 days and 9 hours left from now!

U.S. Wins Wild One

The U.S. won on a wild game against Puerto Rico. I almost lost all hope
on them until the bases were loaded and we had Youk and Wright up to
bat. Once Youk walked, I knew Wright could get the run or runs we
needed. This may have been the first time I have ever cheered for a
Mets player to get a hit. Anyway, Congrats to the U.S. on the 6-5 win.
This was definitely a great game and it had a tremendous ending.

More to this post later.

Braves Beat Mets

Braves 5 Mets 1
The Braves won another Spring Training game behind the strong start of Jair Jurrjens and a Josh Anderson home run. JJ went 6 innings giving up 4 hits and no runs while striking out 6 and getting the Win. The Bullpen was strong again and gave up 1 run and 3 hits the rest of the game.
The offense was highlighted by Josh Anderson’s early 2 run shot. Hicks had a 2 run single and Prado added an RBI single. The Met’s were missing the majority of their starters because of the WBC, so the win wasn’t as big. It’s a win nevertheless and the Braves are in 1st place in the Grapefruit League.

Chipper Jones will not be playing in the Classic anymore this year and will rejoin the Braves sometime this week.
Gregor Blanco went 0-4 with a strikeout with Venezuela.

Other News
Phil Stockman got released from the Braves because of constant injuries, mainly from his back.
Garret Anderson is cleared to run again after suffering from a calf strain.
Parr, Marek, Redmond, and Luis Valdez were
optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Francisley Bueno, Mariano Gomez, Phillip Britton, and Matt Kennelly were
re-assigned to Minor League camp.

Braves, U.S., Lose

The Braves had their 10-game streak end with a close 1-2 loss to Pujols and the Cardinals. There was not too many exciting things about this game except Frenchy had another great game going 2-2 and Prado had a very good day going 3-3 with an RBI.
Kawakami had a decent outing going 4.2 innings only giving up 2 runs and a walk, but he did give up 7 hits. Our bullpen was almost perfect again as they only gave up a hit over their 4.1 innings. Here are the box stats for the Braves

The Braves will play the Astros today at 1:05 ET. We have our ace Derek Lowe on the mound to start.

The U.S. had a disappointing loss yesterday as well. The lost to Puerto Rico 11-1 in a game that got cut short in the 7th inning because they were down by 10. The U.S. pitching was just Horrible!!  Peavy started and gave up 6 runs over 2 innings while Thornton sweetened the game by giving up 4 runs over 2/3rds of an innings. The rest were decent, but it didn’t matter as the offense wasn’t good either and only scored 1 run. Brian McCann had a decent game going 2-3 with the only RBI, a double, and a strikeout with runners in scoring position. Chipper wasn’t himself again as he went 0-3 with a strikeout. The U.S. will play an elimination game against the Dutch. If they win, they will stay in. If they lose, they are out and will leave embarrassed. They need to step in up.

Javier Vazquez of the Braves was pitching for P.R. against the U.S. and had a great game. He got the Win going 5 strong innings and gave up 1 run (from teammate Brian McCann’s RBI double), 4 hits, and struck out 2. Even though we lost, I am glad Vazquez had a great game against this loaded lineup. I can’t wait to see how he does against the Mets and Phillies. He probably has Beltran and Delgado figured out since they are teammates on Puerto Rico.

Good for Javy, and let’s hope the U.S. picks in up. They play the Netherlands today at 7:30 ET.
