Chipper gets Extended: Josh Anderson Traded

Recently, the Braves traded speedy Outfielder Josh Anderson to the
Tigers for right-handed prospect reliever Rudy Darrow. Josh Anderson
was expected to take the Centerfield job once the season was over. Josh
had a decent spring, but posted a .283 on-base percentage in 19
Grapefruit League games. Schafer proved that he deserved it by hitting
.373 and recorded a .403 on-base percentage. Josh Anderson was out of
options, making it a very difficult decision. Wren has not ruled out
Gregor Blanco out of competition for CF, but it seems like Schafer is
the best bet to start the season in the starting line-up.

It seems like this will be the first year of the Schafer Era, which should last for a very, very long time.

The
prospect we got from the Tigers, Rudy Darrow, is suppose to be very
good and almost ready to play in the Majors. This really makes me
wonder why the Tigers would give up a reliever when that is what they
needed and already outfielders Granderson, Ordonez, Sheffield, Thames,
and Guillen. Today though, they released Sheffield, opening a spot for
Anderson to possibly play a bench role. Of course, the Tigers have not
made many good moves in a while, so I am hoping this one is another
that could help the Braves in the future. Other moves that have really
benefited with the Braves were the Smoltz-Alexander trade and the
Renteria-Jurrjens and Hernandez trade. I wonder what Darrow could end
up being like.
Here is what was on Mark Bowman’s blog:

Darrow,
who is expected to begin the season with Double-A Mississippi, went 5-3
with a 2.02 ERA in 47 combined appearances with Class A West Michigan
and Double-A Erie last year. In the process, the 25-year-old
right-hander posted a ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio of 4.8 and limited
right-handed hitters to a .183 batting average.
“He’s a sidearm
right-hander who throws anywhere from 90-94 [mph] with great sink,”
Wren said while comparing the young reliever’s delivery to Peter
Moylan’s.

Sounds pretty good to me. You get an “A” for this one Wren (at least for right now).

Now about Chipper….

Chipper
Jones and the Braves have agreed to a three-year extension worth over
$42MM that includes an option for 2013. Here is the Breakdown according to The Baltimore Sun

“Due $10 million this season in the option year of a contract that began
in 2006, Jones gets a $3 million signing bonus as part of the new deal,
payable in $1 million installments each Jan. 15 starting next year.

Jones receives annual salaries of $13 million from 2010-12 and can earn
$1.5 million a year in performance bonuses: $750,000 each for 135 and
140 games.

His contract contains a $9 million option for 2013 that would become
guaranteed if he plays in 123 games in 2012 or averages 127 games in
2011-12. The option price could increase by up to $4 million: $1
million each for 128, 133, 138 and 140 games in 2012 (or averages of
132, 137, 138 and 140 in 2011-12). In addition, he could earn $1.5
million in performance bonuses based on the earlier criteria.

If the vesting option fails to become guaranteed, the club would hold a $7 million option.”

I have been waiting for this on
all Spring and I’m very excited. I like the deal and I think he deserves every penny of it.
Chipper won the Batting Crown last year and hit 19 home runs. Like most seasons in his past, he did spend time on the DL.
Like
Myself, many other Braves fans are excited about this. Hopefully he
gets more ABs next year to help show what he is still capable of doing.

Wren gets an A+ for this one.

Other news…

The
only other battle currently for the Braves in ST is the Bullpen.
Caryle, Bennett, and Campillo are in a battle for long reliever while
Acosta is still looking for a spot somewhere in it. Logan and
O’Flaherty are the Lefties looking for a spot, but if Soriano or Moylan
start the season on the DL, both could earn a spot. As of now, I think
Campillo and/or Carlyle will start the season in Atlanta and Bennett
getting traded. Acosta also looks like a player who might get traded,
but I think it’s unlikely. I’m not too sure about Logan and O’Flaherty
yet, but I’m thinking Soriano starts the season on the DL. I also think
that Blanco gets traded. I can see the White Sox being the biggest
suitors, but other teams might take a look at him because of his great
World Baseball Classic stint. We will soon find out though with only 5
days left until opening night.

Braves Beat Mets

Braves 5 Mets 1
The Braves won another Spring Training game behind the strong start of Jair Jurrjens and a Josh Anderson home run. JJ went 6 innings giving up 4 hits and no runs while striking out 6 and getting the Win. The Bullpen was strong again and gave up 1 run and 3 hits the rest of the game.
The offense was highlighted by Josh Anderson’s early 2 run shot. Hicks had a 2 run single and Prado added an RBI single. The Met’s were missing the majority of their starters because of the WBC, so the win wasn’t as big. It’s a win nevertheless and the Braves are in 1st place in the Grapefruit League.

Jorge Campillo got the loss for Mexico against Cuba in the WBC. He gave up 8 hits, 5 runs, and 3 runs.
Chipper Jones will not be playing in the Classic anymore this year and will rejoin the Braves sometime this week.
Gregor Blanco went 0-4 with a strikeout with Venezuela.

Other News
Phil Stockman got released from the Braves because of constant injuries, mainly from his back.
Garret Anderson is cleared to run again after suffering from a calf strain.
Parr, Marek, Redmond, and Luis Valdez were
optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Francisley Bueno, Mariano Gomez, Phillip Britton, and Matt Kennelly were
re-assigned to Minor League camp.

Furcaled

Apparently the word “furcaled” will become a new phrase in baseball from now on.

Furcaled  (pronounced fer-call-d) verb
Definition: Saying you will play for a team and then choosing another a day later.
Words Close to it: Played, Lied to
Example: Griffey just furcaled the Braves.

Don’t mind my last post since it has no real meaning and I don’t want to change the title.

Reaction:
Am I mad? Of course. That and disappointed. When your 2nd favorite baseball player doesn’t choose your favorite team, you will be a little upset.
Are we not gonna be as good? The good thing is that we can easily improvise. He wasn’t what he was 10 years ago, so he is not as important. It would have been a great thing morale-wise and could have probably really helped our team, but I guess this is the way it goes.
Fire Frank Wren? No of course not. He has done a great job this offseason. Griffey WANTED TO go to Seattle. Burnett WANTED TO go to New York. Furcal WANTED TO go to L.A. Peavy COULDN’T come to Atlanta without giving up Hanson, which I totally agree with. Anyways Burnett, Furcal, Peavy, and Griffey not coming to Atlanta could have actually been a blessing. All 4 have had an injury over the last 2 years.
Who will play LF now? It will probably be Schafer in center with Anderson and Diaz in LF. That could definitely help us in the future by getting Anderson and Schafer lots of early playing time. Plus Frenchy could have a good season again. I think it’s very likely.
Has this been a horrible offseason? Nope. To me it has been pretty decent. We were luck to have enough money to change our pitching staff. The outfield was really just extra. We got 2 extra bullpen arms (they could actually be decent next year), we got a backup catcher which we also really needed, we got 3 very good pitchers, and we don’t have Corky Miller or Chuck James on the team. Decent enough for me. Oh and we never lost any important players other than John Smoltz, but he was a free agent.
Should we blame David O’Brien of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution? No that has got to be a joke. If Griffey didn’t come because of that, then good since we didn’t want him. If you can’t take the media giving their opinion of where they think you will go, then you shoudln’t play baseball. Plus Jr’s friends told David a lot of the info.
Who are still options in the outfield that aren’t already on the Braves? Swisher, Nady, Anderson, Edmonds, Gonzalez, Ankiel, and Ludwick.

I still think we can win the East. We have some really good players on our team.

Other news

The Braves are talking extension with Chipper Jones.
That is music to my ears. This really needs to get done. I think he will probably get around a 3/18MM to a 3/24MM deal. There might be some options in it.
Braves avoid Arbitration with Jeff Francoeur.
Some more good news. He’ll be getting around $3.375 this year.

Griffey a Brave?!

As many of you have heard, Ken Griffey Jr, a future Hall of Famer, will choose the the Braves over the Mariners. I am pretty excited about this in many ways.
1. He and Chipper and my favorite players playing the game.
2. He has some power and can still hit decent.
3. He’s cheap.
4. He can help us go back to the playoffs.
5. He might retire as a Brave.
6. He will give us enough time to fully develop Josh Anderson and/or Jordan Schafer.
7. Matt Diaz will get a good amount of at-bats.http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/fantasy/baseball/griffey.jpg

The 13 time all star, Former MVP, over 10 time Gold Glover, will most likely play Left Field with Matt Diaz while letting Anderson or Schafer play center. I was hoping Abreu would be a Brave, but I am not too disappointed. He also have plenty of options if Griffey goes down from an injury.

An interesting fact
Griffey’s dad, Ken Griffey, played left field for the Braves
when Tom Glavine made his debut.

Expect this deal to get finalized today or tomorrow. The deal should be around 2-3 million over 1 or 2 years.

Glavine
http://www3.allaroundphilly.com/blogs/delcotimes/ryanl/uploaded_images/Glavine7-795823.jpg

This deal should also get done in the next 35 hours. It will be around a 1-3 million dollar deal.
It seems like he will take the 5th spot in the rotation, meaning we have that done with. The only other deal I could possibly see is Ohman coming here for around 3 million, but it is unlikely. I do like the way our team looks and I think we are ready to take on the Mets and Phillies.
