Congrats Japan
I would like to also say congrats to Japan for winning the WBC. It was a great game and you deserved it.
Braves fans, expect a trade to be coming in the next 2 weeks. The Tigers look like the most likely trade partners. The Marlins or Twins could be other suitors.
Only 12 days and 9 hours left from now!
U.S. Wins Wild One
The U.S. won on a wild game against Puerto Rico. I almost lost all hope
on them until the bases were loaded and we had Youk and Wright up to
bat. Once Youk walked, I knew Wright could get the run or runs we
needed. This may have been the first time I have ever cheered for a
Mets player to get a hit. Anyway, Congrats to the U.S. on the 6-5 win.
This was definitely a great game and it had a tremendous ending.
More to this post later.
Braves Beat Mets
Braves 5 Mets 1
The Braves won another Spring Training game behind the strong start of Jair Jurrjens and a Josh Anderson home run. JJ went 6 innings giving up 4 hits and no runs while striking out 6 and getting the Win. The Bullpen was strong again and gave up 1 run and 3 hits the rest of the game.
The offense was highlighted by Josh Anderson’s early 2 run shot. Hicks had a 2 run single and Prado added an RBI single. The Met’s were missing the majority of their starters because of the WBC, so the win wasn’t as big. It’s a win nevertheless and the Braves are in 1st place in the Grapefruit League.

WBC
Jorge Campillo got the loss for Mexico against Cuba in the WBC. He gave up 8 hits, 5 runs, and 3 runs.
Chipper Jones will not be playing in the Classic anymore this year and will rejoin the Braves sometime this week.
Gregor Blanco went 0-4 with a strikeout with Venezuela.
Other News
Phil Stockman got released from the Braves because of constant injuries, mainly from his back.
Garret Anderson is cleared to run again after suffering from a calf strain.
Parr, Marek, Redmond, and Luis Valdez were
optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Francisley Bueno, Mariano Gomez, Phillip Britton, and Matt Kennelly were
re-assigned to Minor League camp.
Braves, U.S., Lose
The Braves had their 10-game streak end with a close 1-2 loss to Pujols and the Cardinals. There was not too many exciting things about this game except Frenchy had another great game going 2-2 and Prado had a very good day going 3-3 with an RBI.
Kawakami had a decent outing going 4.2 innings only giving up 2 runs and a walk, but he did give up 7 hits. Our bullpen was almost perfect again as they only gave up a hit over their 4.1 innings. Here are the box stats for the Braves

The Braves will play the Astros today at 1:05 ET. We have our ace Derek Lowe on the mound to start.
The U.S. had a disappointing loss yesterday as well. The lost to Puerto Rico 11-1 in a game that got cut short in the 7th inning because they were down by 10. The U.S. pitching was just Horrible!! Peavy started and gave up 6 runs over 2 innings while Thornton sweetened the game by giving up 4 runs over 2/3rds of an innings. The rest were decent, but it didn’t matter as the offense wasn’t good either and only scored 1 run. Brian McCann had a decent game going 2-3 with the only RBI, a double, and a strikeout with runners in scoring position. Chipper wasn’t himself again as he went 0-3 with a strikeout. The U.S. will play an elimination game against the Dutch. If they win, they will stay in. If they lose, they are out and will leave embarrassed. They need to step in up.

Javier Vazquez of the Braves was pitching for P.R. against the U.S. and had a great game. He got the Win going 5 strong innings and gave up 1 run (from teammate Brian McCann’s RBI double), 4 hits, and struck out 2. Even though we lost, I am glad Vazquez had a great game against this loaded lineup. I can’t wait to see how he does against the Mets and Phillies. He probably has Beltran and Delgado figured out since they are teammates on Puerto Rico.

Good for Javy, and let’s hope the U.S. picks in up. They play the Netherlands today at 7:30 ET.
Braves Win Close One Against Phillies
For the 9 time in the Grapefruit League, the Atlanta Braves with many AAA and AA prospects won. It was all Atlanta until Jeff Bennett gave up 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning. We ended up holding the 12-10 win at the end.
We had JoJo Reyes Reyes on the mound and, like every other time so far this Spring, he did great. He allowed 2 runs over 4 hits in 4 innings. He also did not have any control issues and didn’t walk anyone and struck out 4. He did happen to give up a home run to Mayberry, the first this season for the Braves, but it didn’t affect us in the end. I am surprised that we gave up 10 runs, but our offense was able to help us keep the “W.” We really harassed Kyle Kendrick as he gave up 8 runs on 10 hits. Our offense was lead by Clint Sammons who hit two 2-run home runs. Jordan Schafer was back in the lineup today after dealing with injuries and went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base. Jeff Francoeur (2-2 with 2 RBIs), Yunel Escobar (2-4), Matt Diaz (2-3 with 1 RBI), and Diory Hernandez (2-4 with 2 RBIs) all had two hits. Jeff Francoeur has been semi-hot lately and has improved his batting average from .091 to .227 without any strike outs. He has been hitting the ball much better this spring and looks as if he could return back to form, but we will know for sure when it’s midseason. He also drilled Marcus Giles at home telling me his arm is just fine.
The Braves are in first in the Grapefruit League by 1 game. The Twins are right behind

Chipper was left out of the lineup today for the U.S., but McCann was not but he went 0-2. Gregor Blanco had another great day for his native Venezuela as he went 3-5 with an RBI triple, a double, and a single. He was a homer away from the cycle against the U.S.
I guess Blanco is a very common last name in Venezuela as they had three Blancos playing. The U.S. ended up losing the game, but it didn’t really matter since they are moving on. Chipper will hopefully play the next game with them.
Jorge Campillo started for Mexico and went 4.2 innings giving up 6 hits and 1 solo home run. He struck out 2 as Mexico beat Australia 16-1 on the mercy-rule.
The Braves play the Nationals today with Jurrjens, Medlen, and Gonzalez scheduled to pitch.
Braves and U.S. Win; Chipper Hurt
Sorry I’m a little late, but the Braves beat the Phillies while U.S. came back to beat Venezuela.
To recap the Braves game…
We had Tommy Hanson on the mound and he pitched solid yet again. Hanson really should start off in Atlanta. He has completely dominated since Spring Training began. He went 4 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 run against the World Champions. He also struck out SEVEN (7) batters. That’s unbelievable. The kid has some serious talent and needs to stay at this level.
Brandon Jones was the only other noticeable player going 2-4 with a run scored.
The final score was 7-2

In the U.S. game, Chipper was the only Brave playing as McCann was taking a rest. Chipper had another bad day as he went 0-3 with 2 Strikeouts. He also felt discomfort so he might miss the next U.S. game. Hopefully it’s nothing serious. The U.S. beat Venezuela 15-6.
http://espn.go.com/broadband/player.swf?mediaId=3963427
Other Braves in the Classic
Panama
Concepcion Rodriguez went 0-4 with a strikeout.
Yeliar Castro pitched 2 innings giving up 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 home run, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts.
Venezuela
Gregor Blanco had a great day going 3-5 with an RBI, 1 run scored, 1 triple, and a stolen base against the U.S.
The
Braves are playing an inter-squad game today. Tomorrow we play the Astros with
Derek Lowe scheduled to pitch the first four innings.
Notes:
- The Braves pitching has yet to allow a Home Run yet this spring (not counting inter-squad games).
- They are tied with the Pirates for first place in the Grapefruit League.

Braves Have Big Day
Let’s start with the WBC…
U.S.A. narrowly beat Canada in a thriller 6-5 victory. The Canadians beat the U.S. last year, so extra effort was put in today in their opener. There was a total of 5 home runs hit in the game; 3 for the U.S., 2 for Canada. One of the home runs was hit by Brian McCann. He hit a 2 run home run that broke the tie and gave the U.S. a lead that they held the rest of the game. Congrats Brian. You are representing our club and country well. Check out McCann’s blast. Chipper’s face looks priceless when he hugs McCann.
McCann also had a Sac-Fly that tied the game until Joey Votto’s blast. He ended the day going 1-2 with 3 RBIs, 1 run scored, and a walk along with that home run. Chipper was a little off today going 0-4 with a walk and 3 strikeouts.

Other Braves playing today in the Classic:
Javier Vazquez started for his country, Puerto Rico. He went 4.1 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 3. He earned the win and PR won 7-0 against Panama.
Concepcion Rodriguez didn’t have such a big day as his country, Panama, lost and he went 0-3 with a strikeout.
The Dutch somehow beat the DR today with really nobody on their team. Andruw Jones played with them in 2006, but he had to do Spring Training this year to try to make the Rangers. Jair Jurrjens also decided not to play for them since he pitched so much last season. It will be remembered as one biggest upsets in the WBC.
http://espn.go.com/broadband/player.swf?mediaId=3961408
http://espn.go.com/broadband/player.swf?mediaId=3960316
http://espn.go.com/broadband/player.swf?mediaId=3961153
Now about those Braves…
They stayed hot and beat the Yankees 3-1. This is the 2nd time this Spring that we beat the Yankees. Jair Jurrjens was on the mound and gave a great performance going 3.2 innings giving up 1 run, 4 hits, no walks, and struck out 3. The one run ended up being the only run given up. Our bullpen has been exceptionally good so far this spring. It is a very good sign.
The runs we scored were all off solo home runs hit by Casey Kotchman, Greg Norton, and Brandon Jones. That really summarized it all up. Here is the box stats:

Braves Stay Hot in Spring Training
First off I would like to say good luck to the U.S. and the other teams in the World Baseball Classic and hope you represent your country well. The Braves players representing their country are
Chipper Jones and Brian McCann (U.S.),
Javier Vazquez
(Puerto Rico),
Jorge Campillo (Mexico),
Manny Acosta, Yeliar Castro,
and Concepcion Rodriguez (Panama),
Gregor
Blanco (Venezuela),
And Scott Diamond and Bryan Dumensil (Canada)
Also, congrats to Andruw Jones who had 2 hits in his game. It may not sound big, but it’s huge for Andruw. He now has a batting average over .200. He also didn’t strikeout any and walked once. Amazing.
Now about the game against the Astros….
Reyes pitched another excellent game. He pitched 4 innings of no-hit ball while walking 2 batters and striking out none. He is making a case for himself and he is doing it well. He has a 1.00 ERA and is showing that he is good enough to keep in the Braves organization.
Everyone else also pitched very well. We allowed 0 runs, 2 hits, and 3 walks. We only struck out 4 the whole game, but it didn’t matter as they couldn’t do much offensively.

We did well with our offensive as well as we scored 13 runs. Lately, we have been putting up many runs due to our patience in the batters box. Today is the 2nd day in a row that we have walked 8 times. He also had more runs than hits…again. This is a good sign and I hope we keep it up.
Garret Anderson did strain his calf while warming up, and he was replaced by Matt Diaz who had a big night going 3-4 and was a triple away from the cycle. Martin Prado also had a big night going 2-4 with 3 RBIs and a walk. Here is the box for the hitting stats.

I know it’s doesn’t matter at all but the Braves are tied with the
Pirates for best record in the NL and half a game behind the Orioles in
the Grapefruit League.
The Braves will play the Yankees for the 2nd time this spring with Jair Jurrjens, Buddy Carlyle, and Blaine Boyer scheduled to pitch. Hopefully they will come out with a W.
Another Day, Another Win
The Braves beat Venezuela today in a game that was helping them get prepared for the World Baseball Classic, which is now undergo.
We had Derek Lowe to start the game and he had a decent game. He pitched 3 innings of no-hit ball, but he allowed a run because of walks, wild pitches, and a stolen base. It was all good on the pitching side until Jeff Ridgway came in the game. Let’s just say it got bad.

Hitting-wise, we looked average. Nobody got more than one hit the whole game. Jeff Francoeur hit a home run off of Brad Nelson who was loaned from the Braves for the day. It’s not very impressive, but it is a homer nevertheless. Diory Hernandez, Freedie Freeman, and Barbaro Canizares hit doubles while Omar Infante got the lone single. Here is the box for the hitting.
|
Jo-Jo Reyes, Jeff Bennett, Boone Logan, Manny Acosta, and Phil Stockman are scheduled to pitch tomorrow against the Astros.
Congrats to Chipper Jones and McCann for both going deep for the U.S. against the Phillies. Hope they can keep up their Phillie dominance.
Other Braves Players Playing Today
Campillo- 3 innings, 3 hits, 3 strikeouts, 2 runs allowed, and the Win against Colorado for Mexico
Scott Diamond- 2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs allowed, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, Got the Win against the Yankees for Canada
Concepcion Rodriguez- 2-4, 2 doubles, 1 run scored, 1 RBI for Panama
Brian McCann- 1-2, Solo Home Run, 1 run scored, 1 RBI for the U.S.
Chipper Jones, 1-4, 3-Run Home Run, 2 runs scored, 3 RBIs, 1 walk for the U.S.
Blanco, 1-1 for Venezuela
Just When You Think Reyes is Just Another Player Taking up Space and Money…
He goes out and has a successful outing, which I haven’t seen in a long time. He pitched 3 innings of 2 hit ball against the World Champions. He only walked 1 but he had no strikeouts. Last year he went 3-11 with almost an ERA of 6! That is nothing to be proud of. He was projected to be a 2nd or 3rd starter before he made it up to the Bigs, but his attitude and work ethics caused him to be hated by many Braves fans and not favored to win a spot in the rotation. Heck, if was a little bit better last year and used all the talent he has, Glavine wouldn’t be a Brave. He still has more potential than a lot pitchers in the Major Leagues, but his problem is that he doesn’t use it. I he continues to pitch like today, he could either get moved to the bullpen or take the 5th spot and move Glavine to the ‘pen.

Braves-3 Phillies-7
We got to test ourselves against the World Series Winners and even though we lost, we got a good amount accomplished. The Braves were up until Jeff Ridgeway gave up 4 runs, 2 walks, and 4 hits over 2 outs. Moylan also got to be tested for the first time in a year and gave up 1 run over 1 inning. O’Flaherty, Schreiber, Bennett, Marek, and Stockman also got to see some action.
On the Offensive Side
McCann homered off Chan Ho Park and Josh Anderson got 2 hits, including a triple. Frenchy went 0-2 lowering his average to .100, Heyward went 1-3, and Freeman went 0-4. Chipper had 1 double over 3 at bats.
Braves:3-2
Other news
- Javy Lopez is promoting a new bat company called “Bones”
- The Braves have 10 players representing their countries in the WBC. Chipper Jones and Brian McCann (U.S.), Javier Vazquez
(Puerto Rico), Jorge Campillo (Mexico), Manny Acosta, Yeliar Castro, and Concepcion Rodriguez (Panama), Gregor
Blanco (Venezuela), and Scott Diamond and Bryan Dumensil (Canada) are those who are involved. Yeliar Castro, Concepcion Rodriguez, Scott Diamond, and Bryan Dumesnil are not currently on the Brave’s 40 man roster.
